On 7 May Muilleachs went to Iona to see the launch of The Red Boat. After a thrilling row round Iona, it was a real pleasure to attend the naming celebration in the evening. We hope to see a lot more of each other on the water, and are particularly looking forward to the Iona Regatta in July.
Proud to report that John’s Round Mull Row diary won the 2016 SCRA Cruising Log award, which was made at the recent Freshwater Sprints over at Loch Tummel. To read the diary, please see the earlier “Round Mull Row” post. The pictures show the log, the inscription inside and the wonderful photo diary compiled by Eug Thomasson, with screen print of one of the skiffs passing Staffa by Dawn Reade. Thanks to all the Mull skiffers and support team for making this wonderful trip possible.
We had an extended weekend of rowing on Iona 28th to 31st July. Altogether around 100 people came out in the skiffs over the period. Lots of “have a go” sessions, races on the Saturday and social rows on Friday and Sunday. Both Mull skiffs were there and we were joined by a team from Seil with their skiff, Selkie. Islanders and visitors alike enjoyed some great rowing in excellent weather. We also welcomed rowers from Fionnphort and Bunessan. Might we someday see a skiff from the Ross to rival Iona’s? Iona is a great place to row. The coastal […]
Plans are in hand to build a St Ayles Skiff on Iona and to support the initiative and give local teams the opportunity to have a go at rowing, a series of skiff races are planned during Gala Fortnight at the end of July. Organised jointly by Iona boatbuilders and Isle of Mull Coastal Rowing, races will be held in the Sound of Iona Saturday 30th July.
Sandy Macdonald, boatbuilder over at Ardslignish on Ardnamurchan has very kindly gifted his Cuach (cuckoo) to our club. She is a beautiful traditional double-ended dipping lugsail skiff (similar to the one pictured) and we hope that she will give all members and our cadets in particular the opportunity to learn new sailing skills and of course have much enjoyment. We will be having a wee handover ceremony at Tobermory on Saturday 18th June at 2:00pm. All are welcome, club members and non-members alike. We hope that some of our cadets will be out in the club’s dinghies, and we will […]
ROUND MULL ROW MAY 2016 Diary The row was part of the Community fundraising effort to resurface and re-equip the Dervaig village sports pitch. Around 10 years ago the original sports pitch was supported by Nick Turnbull in his epic solo voyage around Mull in a one-man rowing skiff. His time of around 27 hours was therefore a target to aim for. Tuesday 24th The original plan was to start and finish at Croig, but it didn’t escape the trip planners that Tobermory offered a better prospect for the collection buckets. Also by starting on Tuesday evening and heading […]
